What Is the Vestibular System?
Our vestibular system helps us balance. The peripheral vestibular system is found in our inner ear and the central vestibular system is found in our brain. These systems detect how our body is moving through space and send this information to our brain where it is combined with information from our eyes, bones, muscles and joints. Our brain can then decide what it needs to do to keep us balanced as we move through a variety of environments and tasks in our day.
What Are Vestibular Conditions?
If you are experiencing dizziness, a sensation of disequilibrium or difficulties balancing you may have something going on with your vestibular system. After a concussion, it can also be common to experience ongoing symptoms including dizziness and imbalance which might indicate that your vestibular system is involved.
Some common Vestibular Disorders include:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Vestibular Neuritis
Unilateral/Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction or Loss
Post-Concussion Syndrome
Meniere’s Disease (Endolymphatic Hydrops)
Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS)
Vestibular Migraine (Migraine Associated Vertigo)
Cervicogenic Dizziness/Cervical Vertigo
Acoustic Neuroma
Dizziness and Imbalance following a stroke (CVA)
Dehiscence or Perilymphatic Fistulas
Ototoxicity

What Can a Physiotherapist Do To Help?
Physiotherapists with specialized training in Vestibular Rehabilitation can help you improve your dizzy symptoms and balance. This usually requires you to work together on an individualized exercise program. Since many vestibular conditions are also associated with fatigue and require you to scale back your day-to-day activities, physiotherapists can also help guide your successful return to work/play/hobbies etc.
What To Expect at the Initial Assessment:
Treatment
- Dedicated, one-on-one treatment.
- Some conditions such as BPPV can be treated within a couple of treatment sessions.
- Other conditions will require your participation in regular exercises, activity modification and time.
- Education on your condition and influencing factors are key to helping your recovery.
How to Prepare
- The assessment can often provoke symptoms so it may be helpful for you to be accompanied to the appointment by someone who can help get you home safely if you feel dizzy.
- If you have been to other medical providers to address your dizziness, please bring the results of any testing they have done.
- If you have been prescribed any medications to help with your dizziness please write them down so you can inform us.
- If your insurance requires a doctor’s referral in order to cover Physiotherapy, obtain a referral so you can get the treatment covered.
